Combined in-line saddle-stitching and perfect binding

Some of our customers have a requirement to produce both stitched and perfect bound books in-line with high performance digital printers. The IBIS Smart-binder can be configured to achieve this in two different ways:

Case study 1: Stitched and bound books for lower production volumes.
A printing factory in Europe recently installed our Smart-binder SB-4 system to produce both saddle-stitched and perfect bound books. This system is used to produce educational text books.

The perfect-bound books are made in a unique way which has been pioneered by IBIS. The Smart-binder first processes digitally-printed sheets into ISG cold-glued, folded signatures (with approx 16 pages in each signature). These are collected together automatically by our SCF module (under bar-code control), and pushed directly into the clamp of a CP Bourg BB3002 for hot-melt and cover to be added (no spine milling needed). The BB3002 delivers high quality bound books at rates up to about 400 per hour and the whole operation is 100% in-line. Book thicknesses can vary on-the-run , no intermediate manual handling needed and the bind quality is similar to thread-sewn books.

Case study 2: Stitched and bound books for high production volumes.
Last year, on the east coast of the USA, the first system was installed which combines together a Muller Martini Perfect Binding with an IBIS Smart-binder, in connection with a 400 feet/min digital printer. The majority of the output from this new line comprises educational booklets for schools.
After the web-cutter the sheet stream can be diverted in two different directions. In one direction the sheets are stacked and conveyed to a complete Muller Martini SIGMA binding line which processes up to 1,000 perfect-bound books per hour. In the other direction sheets flow directly into an IBIS Smart-binder SB-3 which produces up to 6,000 stitched books (or saddle-glued) books per hour.

The complete system produces soft-cover perfect bound or saddle-stitched educational booklets, ready for shipping, with the minimum of material handling. The line can switch instantaneously between either stitched or perfect-bound books - a production approach which is set to become increasingly common within the book industry.

We would be pleased to provide further information about our IBIS systems on request.

Yours sincerely
