Key features of the Smart-binder SB-1 used in-line with the Océ VarioPrint i300 color sheet-fed press

High Speed: The SB-1 can accept sheets at up to 200 sheets/min and has a max stitcher/trimmer cycling rate of 100 cycles/min (6,000 booklets/hour, or 12,000 in 2-up mode). This means that all booklets from 2-sheets (8 pages) up to 50 sheets (200 pages) can be produced at full VPi300 printer speed. This gives a large improvement in productivity compared with slower booklet-makers which require a slow down in printer speed when making thinner booklets.

Avoiding printer pauses: All other booklet-makers for use in-line with the VPi300 require the printer to pause after the last sheet of each booklet is printed. The Smart-binder SB-1 includes an integral sheet ‘buffer‘ which means that no printer pauses are needed.

Link to the VarioPrint i300 printer: The SB-1 will be offered with a DFD connection with the VPi300. This will ensure that only good booklets are delivered and any incorrectly assembled booklets are automatically rejected. When the SB-1 stops then it will signal to the VPi300 to allow job recovery and reprinting as needed.

Standard or 2D barcode with link to Prisma: The SB-1 reads a bar-code (or 2D code) printed on each sheet and in future will also communicate with Canon’s Prisma system.

Booklet quality: High quality booklets can be produced without marking. Individual sheet folding results in good lay-flat. The optional SM-100 ‘spine squaring’ module is available as an SB-1 add-on to further improve booklet lay-flat if needed.

Two-up production: The SB-1 can be fitted with an optional trimmer center-knife and four wire stitch heads. This allows small format booklets (such as A6 or A5 landscape) to be produced 2-up at speeds up to 12,000 booklets/hour.

ISG cold-gluing: The patented ISG cold-glue binding system provides a high quality alternative to conventional wire stitching, is cheaper, easier and more reliable to use and requires minimal maintenance.

Optional modules: A large range of options is available for the SB-1, including cover feeding, sheet feeding, perforating etc.

Low maintenance: the SB-1 is a very heavy-duty design capable of delivering over a million booklets each month for many years without needing parts replacement. This means that the SB-1 maintenance costs are very low.
